CELEBRATING 180 YEARS

Although officially founded in 1888, the origin of this church’s congregation can be documented to an even earlier date. As early as 1842 arrangements were made for the minister of the Maple church to preach every third Sunday to the congregation of “Upper Corner”, later St. Paul’s Vaughan. At this time, services were held in homes, with most people walking to the service and the minister arriving on horseback.

In 1884, a modest frame structure was built which eventually was replaced by current brick church in 1888. The church has a unique style and detailing- the checkerboard design at the the steeple-conceived by local Scottish masons, has deemed it a historical church in Vaughan.

Throughout its history, St. Paul’s has had members from many of Vaughan’s pioneering families. David Rutherford, a member of session and formerly the Clerk of Session, is the son of the man who was honoured by having Rutherford Road named after him in recognition of this service to the community. The surrounding church cemetery holds some of Vaughan’s pioneer settlers and notables like former MPP Major Alexander MacKenzie and former Reeve Albert Rutherford.
